"The 13 colonies of America"

Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the ~twilight's~ last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ~ramparts we watch'd,~ were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.

O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen thro' the ~mists of the deep,~
Where the foe's ~haughty host~ in d~r~e~a~d s~i~l~e~n~c~e reposes,
What is that which the ~breeze~, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream:

'Tis the star-spangled banner: O, long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's ~confusion~
A home and a country should leave ~us no more?~
Their blood has wash'd out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave:

And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O, thus be it ever when freemen shall stand,
Between ~their lov'd homes~ and the ~war's desolation;~
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land
Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserv'd us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust"

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

This Alfred represents the 13 Colonies of Britain with lasted from 1607 - 1775/6
Jamestown was the first colony founded in 1607, thus becoming the first permanent English settlement. Though the downside was that it was on a marsh when the King of England told them to stay away from marshes due to the salty water and thick forest along with Indians who lived on the marshland where Jamestown originally was colonized.

/ He loves his mother so much, he loves England and wouldn't do a thing to hurt him ever since 1607 until 1775. He loves him, and no one can change that. He wants to impress his mommy, by building things and exploring within range,/

England's king really only made the colonies to make more money for himself and his country of England, no true purpose of the colonies except for money. From my knowlage that is. ( and if you disagree with something in my headcanon then don't be afraid to note me on my mistake and I'll change it for you eue )

And when the Charters from England's king were passed those two were making England more money from making another colony. So of course he would approve of it. And soon there would be 13 complete English Colonies of America while England continued to make colonies for money, and Spain colonizing Florida along with Netherlands and Sweden setting fur shops up in New York and New Jersey, along with Delaware.

The three sections of the colonies are Southern, New England and Northern colonies.

The Southern colonies encluded the following; Georiga, North and South Carolina, Virginia. They used slaves to help the rich harvest their large plantations. The reason they were so large because of the fertle soil and long growing season.

The New England colonies didn't believe in slavery for they had smaller sizes of plantations and farmers only owned a certant amount of land, so they could harvest crops themselfs.

Northern didn't really harvest because of the cold temperatures and rocky soil. And they didn't really use slaves either, Most of the Northern and English Colonies had a 5% or lower Slave Usage Rate.

Georgia

Georgia is at the bottom of the Southern Colonies, boarding the Savannah River, It was created in 1732, It also left the Union in 1861 but re-joined in 1870.

Georgia is also named after England's King George.

The weather is warm and clammy with fertile soil to make for a perfect growing season for the south, Georgia has many natural beauties like limestone, shale and other rocks, coal, and others.

South Carolina

( British colony 1663 - 1776, American Independence from Great Britan )

South Carolina was chartered in 1663, being named after the King Charles II of England, eventually the spelling changed to 'Carolina' The Yamasee War ( 1715 - 1717 ) was in the back of the colony, the other colonies began to complain to the British solders that they didn't do a good job of protecting the colonists from the Indians.

Much like Georgia, the climate is warm and clammy, South Carolina is also a slave colony, because there was so much land and so many plantations to be farmed, plantation owners needed cheap help to grow and maintain their cash crops, ( Tobacco, grains, indigo, ect ) The muliti-million dollar crop at the time was tobacco.

North Carolina

This colony was also chartered in 1663, named also after King Charles II of England but much sooner the name was changed to Carolina after South Carolina's change. Though both the parts of the Carolina's were very similar, the communication and trade between them was somehow difficult, there were also some rebellion and fights between the two chartered colonies.

Alright, mostly all the south has nice climates built to grow and maintain crops for a long growing season, in which they needed slaves, well that was pretty much the same for this little colony as well, and also most plantations were so large that a farmers closest neighbor was about a mile or two away, all the land in-between was plantations.

Virginia

Virginia's name was applied by Sir Walter Raleigh and Queen Elizabeth I in 1584 after the English Civil War, The colony was just really, a colony, it wasn't chartered. ( Though I could be wrong ) It's founding was in 1607 and before that in 1584 a famous voyager set out to colonize the small island of Roanoke ( present day North Carolina ) The trip was either 4-17 weeks long and the supplies soon got very limited and the last thing the voyagers expected was Indians, and that's what they found, they had landed on Indian land.

After colonization Virginia set up shops and houses, they colony soon grew and farming went to it's highest from the warm climates and longish growing seasons, unlike Georiga's climate; but still crops were grown, harvested and sold on the world market for profit, the colony used slave labor.

Maryland

Maryland is an English and soon to be British colony, founded in 1632, the colony was at first a proprietary colony, the colony was made for religious freedom against the Anglicans, puritans, Catholics, and Quakers. Maryland proved to have religious freedom to all, the main reason it was created. It's early settlements was around the rivers and water-ways of the young colony.

Much like Virginia the economy of the colony was around farming the main crop of the time, Tobacco, the need of cheap labor was high so the demand of african slaves was needed, they used the slaves much like the other colonies, to farm their land and maintain the crops that grew, but as the mark of American Independence came around the corner, Maryland switched it's focus to growing wheat.

Middle Colonies

Delaware

Founded by Swedish and Dutch settlers in 1664, once a part of the Penn Priorship and was known in the lower countries, but in 1071 it finally gained it's separate assembly.
It is also a New Netherlands colony. It's nickname was 'New Sweden'

The colonies' climate was colder but had multiple ports so fishing was mostly what made up it's economy along with few small plantations and a small slave population

Pennsylvania

Founded by William Penn and the Quakers for Religious reasons, to give religious freedom to all. It was chartered in 1682 As for slavery despite the Quakers hate for it colonist had brought in more than 4,000 slaves into the colony of Pennsylvania where the first attempt to abolish slavery took place. ( The Pennsylvania Gradual Abolition Act of 1780 )
But it failed because of the lacking of mentioning the freedom of the ones already enslaved.

A large handful of famous people came from Pennsylvania, an example would be Benjamin Franklin or the most famous citizen in the colony, along with William Penn and Thomas Paine who had a large impact on the colonies with Penn's publishing of a 47 page report on the colonies ( Which hinted the colonies at the American Independence )

It's climate is cold and not many things can grow but they used trade and fish ports to support it's economy, little slave usage

New Jersey

Founded in 1664 and founded by Dutch settlers with a charter, but soon after the Dutch surrender at Fort Amsterdam it became British territory and at one point the colony was cut in half into West and East Jersey, but was put back together as a Royal Colony in 1702 though the boarder was larger than the colony itself.

Fort Amsterdam played a large part in the Anglo-Spanish war, this fort is in Jersey. After it was given up, that is.

It's climate is cold and not many things can grow under these conditions. but the economy was powered by trade and small plantations, not many slaves were used also because of the small farms and fishing jobs that could be done by the fishermen.

New York

Founded in 1664 it was a crown and British territory with a large landmass and also the last New England colony and included Connecticut, Maine, etcetera. Also Dutch settlers came over and settled down in New York, naming it after the city of York in The Netherlands.

Indians also settled in the eastern tip of the colony ( Iroquois ) because it was rightfully their land in the first place.

War took place in the colony of New York along with King Gerorge's war, which only weak and little support was given to the colony, therefore New York declined any involvement.

The French and Indian War, in the upstate’s was the scene fighting the French and Indian war. The largest happening in 1757 where thousands of British solders cordoned off the city and impressed nearly eight hundred persons they found in taverns and other gathering places of sailors.

The climate is cold and not much can grow

Northern Colonies

Connecticut

Founded in 1636, located in British America, it's original name being River Colony for being surrounded and near a lot of the rivers in the area that made for great sea ports and founded by Thomas Hooker

Rhode Island

Chartered in 1663 with it's independence in 1776 by Roger Williams who was a theologian, independent preacher, and linguist. Williams chartered the small 'island' after fleeing for Religious reasons from Connecticut, other islands around were named after life's virtues.

In 1663 a Baptist woman by the name of Anne Hutchinson purchased land on the island from the Native Americans, settlers soon came to make a home of the purchased land.

Most religious groups were welcomed.

Massachusetts

Chartered in 1691 by a man named William and a woman named Mary had links to Scotland and England at one point. Later in the years the small state had the most stable ecodomy from fishing, farming and trading, along with the most population in a small state.

A large percentage of the land around was owned by the Native Americans which proved a large problem for the settlers who only wanted peace and to live on the land.

Most of the population died from diseases brought by traders and fishermen.

England banished the German Quakers and the Baptists from the state.

New Hampshire

A formal colony orginzed in 1691 by William and Mary as well, for religious purposes. The economy was made up of logging and fishing, making up a large percentage of the colonies' economy. The colony was ruled for many years by the Puritans but in 1775 the small state finally adopted a union.

The Shot Heard Around the World

Was a phrase, and the start of the Revolutionary War after local Americans fired their guns at British officials, at Lexington Concord, it is told that - that shot was indeed heard around the world, the spark of the revolution.

The war itself lasted 8 years until the British finally surrendered and signed the Treaty of Paris, ending the war and forcing England to give over independence, they gladly did it.

Beginnings

The American army wasn't clean, trained, or professional. They didn't have uniforms and simply fought in their colony clothing. On the good side, their darkish clothing with natural dirt on them mixed in with the fabric made good cameo.

George Washington, the first General and commander for the small military was strong and wise, one of the smartest people of their time. He trained his small platoon of solders to hold a gun and fire it, most of the soldiers were volunteers or hired missionaries, minutemen or militias.

Advantages for the colonies
* Knew the land
* Fought using Native American tactics
* Had slightly cameo clothing
* Had Spain and France on their side
* Fought the war in their own territory.

Advantages for the British
* Well trained army
* Well built ships
* Money money money,
* Well trained navy
* Guns, weapons, ect.

Disadvantages for the Colonies
* Was fighting against the most powerful army/navy in the world at the time
* Had little to no money,
* Government had no control of money/couldn't force states to give money for the war
* Little food, amo, guns
* Untrained army

Disadvantages for the British
* Didn't know the land
* Wore bright red coats instead of camo
* Had to cross the Atlantic Ocean to fight, 6 week journey
* Had no allies in the war

Battles

After the shot heard around the world at Lexington and Concord, the British retreated and George won that first small battle by a slender hair. But the British returned and started to storm Concord where they held their weapons, amo, clothing, food ect. George and his men were taken by surprise but managed to force the British back in their hiding holes, or to retreat in the thick forests.

Bennington

This battle took place at New York in 1777 about ten miles from Vermont thousands of militia were stationed there and the two Generals ( General John Stark, and reinforced by men led by Colonel Seth Warner ) with some Green mountain Boys here and there, stationed in New York. They thought the small area would only be lightly defended by the British. A stand off finally happen leaving about one thousand Militia and Minutemen dead with multiple deaths for the British also, the British winning the battle.

Saratoga

This battle took place in Saratoga, New York to take control of the Hudson river by the british, A large percentage of the solders under control by a man from Quebec, Canada ( Which at the time was ruled by France and fought for by England ) After the battle being fought by the river valley ( Ending in the Colonies' Victory ) France decided to help the Colonies, impressed by the victory against their enemy, the French provided a Navy, which America really needed at the time, France provided Naval aid, many people died on both sides.

Ticonderoga

This battle took place at Fort Ticonderoga in the South of New York for the large fort owned by the colonies, England thought they could advance in the war if they took the large fort. 8,000 plus English invaded. A small army of colonists ( only 3 or 4 thousand ) were at the fort at the time. Guns were fired and some deaths were obvious. The British one and stormed the fort and claimed it along with Fort Independence, they kept chasing down the retreating Americans to their next battle

Bunker Hill

The battle took place on Breed's Hill in 1775 during the Siege of Boston only 1,200 American soldiers were present while the British brought a good 2,000 to the front lines. The plan was for the British to invade and claim the surrounding areas as their own around Bunker Hill, leaving the Americans without a place to go and without a choice but to surrender. Three assaults finally happened before the small section of the area was claimed by the British. But the colonists retreated over the hill and into another state and region. Hundreds of deaths from both sides and the battle ending in England's victory.

The Battle of Yorktown

The final, large battle took place in Yorktown, New York in 1781. The victory came slightly, this battle marked the end of the war. The battle raged and Washington won after the surrender of General Cornwallis. Thousands of French solders landed in the American colonies to help out and fight off the British along with the thousands of the soon to be Americans. The battle raged until the middle of summer where the British was supposedly planning another Siege which made Washington angry and want the battle to be over. The French naval ships blocked off the only route out into the ocean as the battle raged on land, preventing anymore aid to come in and any solder to go out on ships, British naval ships were guided by General Corn Wallias. Bombardment happened between France and England ships and land troops. But at the final round of the battle, Cornwallias called in sick! And sent an untrained general to fight the war! He was killed. The British forces started to dissolve rapidly and so did their guns and amo, America and France beat the English around and the good thing was, they had no where to go, they had no choice to surrender. And at the end of the battle when nearly 7,000 British deaths were counted out of 10,000, England, finally surrendered the war, and America's longed for Independence.

Fort Necessity

Fort Necessity, Pennsylvania is where George Washington and his solders spent the long harsh winter during the war. The living conditions were horrible and soon they ran out of food, having to go to a meal which only contained flower and water. Washington himself stayed in a hotel on Mount. Washington away from the camp but still in reach for his solders if an attack would take place, not like it would in 7 feet of snow. Washington faced multiple challenges during the cold season.

Disease

Smallpox took a big affect on the solders, since one hut stored 10 solders with a total of 4-5,000 solders, the disease spread through the air and spread very quickly, nearly killing off half the solders. Washington himself survived smallpox as a boy and was immune to it, I wish I could say the same for the solders. Smallpox is a airborne sickness that spreads through the air and attacks red blood cells, regenerate more of it's own virus, causing the skin to break out in bleeding yellow blisters, at the time there was no cure. Washington had an idea, one of the most clever in the world at the time. He got a great idea how to vaccinate the person for the disease. He would get the puss from a contaminated victim, cut open the skin of a healthy patient and put the puss in the cut wounds. The healthy patient would get infected but the immune system would fight it off. one out of ten people died from their vaccination.

Prussian Help

A man by the name Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben was an ex Prussian general who was exiled for his homosexuality, aiding the colonists and Washington in preparing the solders for war and turning them into full on killers. He started with bringing cleanliness to the colonies, digging out trees around the forts and flowing them with fresh water from the ocean, the dirt particles would pick up the salt along with freshwater from the steams and melting snow. Then he started to train the solders, of course with the approval with Washington. And soon, the remaining 2,000 troops became professional solders. Of course they would still use their Native American tactics in battle, but now they could teach others what they learned which made a big impact on the war efforts.

Daniel Morgan

An American solder and freedom fighter, with one of the most successful battlefield tacticians in American history. He trained 96 men in the ways of sharpshooting, making up the first Rifle divisions, the most successful in the world. He led them through battle after battle and they always had come out victorious. The military advantage for them was a spinning barrel inside their rifles which made a shot more accurate, thin walls and curved grooves, they were light and more flexible then British muskets.

Nathanael Greene

A man starting out as a low rank militia reached the high ranks of Washington, how? He fought in multiple battles in the war like the one of Saratoga, Trenton, Bunker Hill, ect. He helped a small group of militia train for the war in 1774. IN the battle of Yorktown he was promoted to the forth ranking General and had troops on Long Island and New York protecting the land and people in it. He also fought in the battle of Germantown. But suddenly, in 1776, he died suddenly of sunstroke.

Westward Expansion

After the Revolution ending with America's victory and independence, the gains of the land past the Appalachian ( sp ) mountains ( won by England in the French and Indian War ) all became the America's land, Their allie, France got into some trouble again and the king needed money to fund the war they were fighting. So third president Thomas Jefferson took up the bargain of the Louisiana; which was put up for sale by France for 3 cents an acre. Thomas couldn't pass up the offer, so he bought the land and it too became a LARGE addition to the colonies, they nearly tripled their size! This excited the colonies, new land to explore! ( Britain put a law in place telling the colonies couldn't even settle over the mountains or go pasted them, but since their independence came around, they were free to do what they pleased with their fairly won land ) Thomas said to the colonies to explore as they please and map out new colonies, and so they did. And that little chunk of land was named Louisiana.

Explorations

Thomas wanted to explore the land but he was busy running a new born country, so he hired Lewis and Clark to do the exploring, the accepted it. The plan was to map out a route to get to the Pacific Ocean, and so their journey began, this would turn out to be one of the largest cross country explorations of the time.

The set off on their way through the new found land, getting past the Indians and the thick wilderness. Until they came upon a tribe, the shoshone tribe with a pregnant woman names Sacagawea who gladly offered to help Lewis and Clark in their journey, along with her French husband that is. They set off together with the Indian woman leading them until they reached the Rocky Mountains on horses, which they eventually crossed over and kept on moving and soon they were at their destination, after mapping it out correctly on a piece of paper Sacagawea helped the men back to their settlement back in St. Louis.

[ wip on Westward Expansion ]

Other Supporters in the War

Africans

Slaved or free served on both sides of the war, English and the Colonists promised things like freedom to the slaves and it was a matter of choosing, though Washington didn't let African's unto the war, he changed his mind after Africans went over to too the British side to aid them instead of the Americas.

Thousands escaped their captors when they joined the British side. Half the slave population of South Carolina fled during the war!

Native Americans

The native Americans were divided up passed the mississippi river and the war was a potental threat to them, since the war was being fought mostly on Indian territory. 13,000 fought on the british side after promises of freedom, land and money in return for their help. The largest group made up of Iroquois tribes.

Women

It was a law to fight as a woman in the war, so to help with the efforts some would dress like males and cut their hair and go off to fight into the war. Others stayed to run family businesses and watch children, making money to fuel the economy to buy weapons, clothes, food, ect. Other women posed as spies and went to British camps to serve them while gathering information to take to a horse drawn rider and take to the General, George Washington.

Spies

Spies played a large part in the war, people writing letters and keeping them in leather bags while they were being transported to the general or to a personel. This happened on both sides in every state and between Loyalists ( Supporters of the British ) and the Colonists ( believed in fighting for independence ). Back and forth they went with their little tactics of getting secret information like that one gag, invisible ink.
